Sažetak
The children’s novel Čudnovate zgode šegrta Hlapića by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić (1913), a classic of Croatian children’s literature, has been translated into over twenty different languages. Its first translation, into Czech, appeared in 1930, and translations into Russian and Italian have only recently been added to the list. The circumstances of the appearances of individual translations and their role in establishing cultural dialogues are the focus of interest of the international programme entitled Hlapić − promicatelj hrvatske kulture [Hlapić − A Promoter of Croatian Culture], now in progress. The reception of the translations of Hlapić in the target cultures is being recorded, and international connections are being established among interested researchers, translators and other professionals. The programme includes preparing for the publication of the book Hlapić in the Big Wide World, which will include the results of the programme, as well as comparative analyses of all the translations according to a common methodological procedure specifically developed for this project. Special attention is given to the challenges translators have encountered in conveying elements of the source culture to the contexts of target cultures, and to the solutions adopted by translators.
