Sažetak
Monuments are often interpreted as monumental objects that were installed after an external directive by the regime. In this paper I am trying to show that in the “life of a monument” the decision from above, by a regime, to install it and its very magnificence, are of minor importance. Permanent re-creation of new meanings keeps the monument alive, some even after their physical removal. The life of the monument is achieved through interaction with people whose constant inscription of new meanings into its physical body gives it always new role in specific historical periods. We could say that the first life of the monument begins with its creation by the sculptor, while the second starts with its installation in the public place. My discussion will be based on the example of two monuments in Pirovac which were – and in a way still are – present in the local community.
