Sažetak
In the treatment of bipolar affective disorders many agents have been used. An epidemiologic descriptive analysis of the drug treatment in patients with bipolar affective disorders often includes lithium, carbamazepine or valproate. These agents have shown to be effective in the acute or maintenance treatment of mania in numerous clinical trials and have become almost the standard treatment. The goal of our study is to show differences between these agents in the maintenance treatment of 123 follow up patients with a bipolar affective disorder. 72% of the patients received lithium, 25% received carbamazepine and 3% valproate. Statistically significant differences were found in lithium and it must be underlined that the therapeutic range of carbamazepine is wider and tolerance is better in many patients. These differences may also have an impact on compliance and cost savings could be associated with the treatment with these agents.
