Sažetak
Austro-Ottoman wars at the end of the 17th and at the beginning of the 18th century brought about the changes of state borders by which Baranja found itself within the Habsburg Monarchy, but also caused sufferings and migrations of the population leading to important demographic changes. The demographic recovery may be followed from the middle of the 1730s. In the confessional and demographic sense, an interesting feature of South Baranja is its pronounced confessional and ethnic non-homogeneity in a relatively small area. Members of Croatian, Hungarian, German, and Serbian national groups and a smaller number of Jews and Romas, i.e. Catholics, Calvinists, Orthodox Christians, and several Lutherans lived in settlements, some of which were homogeneous in terms of ethnicity and confession, while others included the population of two or more ethnic and/or confessional groups. By the use of methods of historical demography and of statistical methods and techniques for the analysis of the data extant in canonical visitations for the South Baranja area in the second half of the 18th century and at the beginning of the 19th century, the numbers and their change for members of individual confessional communities and their spatial disposition are determined, their parish organisation and its changes are analysed, and the similarities and differences in the confessional structure in the areas of individual parishes are shown. Most settlements with exclusively or majority Catholic population were in the northern and western part of South Baranja. At the beginning of the 18th century the number of Calvinist settlements exceeded the number of Catholic ones, but with the immigration of a larger number of Catholics that relation changed resulting in a predominance of settlements with Catholic population by mid-18th century. The least detailed and accurate data in the canonical visitations are provided for the Orthodox population and therefore in most cases it is possible to determine only in which settlements the Orthodox lived and in which they were in a majority.
