Sažetak
In the last 20 years Europan is continuously dealing with the'new' forms of urbanity in a 'laboratory' that occupies almost whole Europe with the actors who are educated in various universities and have completly different approaches in discussing contemporary urban issues. On the example of the seventh session of Europan, a phenomenon of urban fragmentation, with the focus on the spatial aspect, is here being discussed. In line with the given topic Sub-urban Challenge, Urban Intensity and Housing Diversity competition sites are precisely chosen. They are located in the existing fragmented and heterogeneous areas within not yet stabilized city edges created mostly by the accumulation of diferent, not related logics and various independent intervenions. Through the comparative analysis of two chosen winning projects in different locations: Rijeka in Croatia and Salzburg in Austria, potentials of the public space, as one of the crucial principle of the urban coherence, are being here elaborated. The aim is to point up lessons from the Europan 7 in creating new assumptions for acting in 'dispersed' city edges observed though the frame of housing. The approach of Europan excludes nostalgia towards historical compact city and it is trying to discuss 'new' strategies and to discover 'new' identity. It will be shown how can the current reality of the city materialization, that is not always following rapid changes in the citizens lifestyles and their living and working cycles, be adequately transformed.
