Sažetak
In this chapter we compare wage setting systems in the construction industry of six European countries, with a specific focus on the interaction between minimum wages and collective bargaining. It was argued that the specific nature of the construction industry and the failure of the market to provide the necessary skills means that the construction industry is frequently more highly regulated than most other sectors of the economy. Moreover, the arduous conditions characteristic of construction work may make it necessary to pay wages above the statutory minimum, with premiums for skilled workers. Industry-wide collective agreements with wage grids differentiated by skill level serve such requirements and are widespread in the industry.
