Sažetak
The age and length-weight relationship were determined for the golden loach, Sabanejewia balcanica in the Rijeka River, a stream in Central Croatia. This is a tributary of the Ilova River that arises with the joining of two streams. A single sampling was conducted in spring 2006 (May and June) about 2.5 km from the mouth of the river. A total of 74 specimens were collected. Males were smaller than females, with maximum observed lengths of 87 and 91 mm respectively. Age was determined from otolith measurements. The length-weight relationship showed a significant difference in size by sex. The length-weight relationship was calculated as W=2x10-6SL3.3408 for males and W=3x10-6SL3.2255 for females, indicating the growth is positively allometric for both males and females, with males growing at a faster rate. The overall sex ratio indicated a domination of males (M:F=1.48:1), which disagrees with data for other related species.
