Sažetak
In this paper the aim is to analyze how the setting interacts with characters in some Italian contemporary novels, in which the plot is situated in Sarajevo in the 90's during the Bosnian War. The choice of the setting directs towards the obvious: in the plot the focus is on suffering and loss during the war, which sets up the predictable mood in the story. However, although in the contemporary novel the setting is closely related to characters, so that it may become the character itself, that does not only mean that the characters react to the events in the city and create conflict in the plot, but that the setting influences them and leads their lives in unexpected directions. Therefore, in these novels, the city itself mirrors the changes in characters' actions. Moreover, different information regarding the background is deduced from the characters' relationship to the setting. Hence, in this kind of narrative structure the representations of the city move the plot, in order to direct the reader towards the complex dynamics in relationships, which are consequence of war and violence. The image of the city thus changes from utopia to dystopia and viceversa, while depicting the characters and their transformations.
