Sažetak
The Plitvice Lakes National Park with its basic phenomenon of tufa barriers presents an area of exceptional importance on the national and global levels. Two largest lakes (Kozjak and Prošćansko) have completely different regimes of water inflow. In general, water level in the lake depends on water discharge from the lake and water loss, and also on the dynamic of tufa barriers growth, their erosion and vegetation fouling on them. In the period from 2000 to 2011 the decreasing trend of mean annual discharge for Kozjak Lake and tributaries of both lakes is observed. Also, decreasing trend of mean annual water levels for Kozjak and Prošćansko lakes was observed as an opposite to trend for the period 1952-1991. This paper analyzes possible influences on water level and discharge in Kozjak and Prošćansko Lakes in the recent period like hydrological and morphological changes, growth of tufa barriers, temperature, macrovegetation. It is obvious that this hydrological system is complex and it leaves space for further interpretations with inevitable need to expand research. Contribution to better protection of lake system lays in multidisciplinary approach.
