Sažetak
Primary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (PHOA) is considered as a rare disease. However, in the past 50 years the disease has been found not to be so rare as it used to be thought. As early as 400 BC Hippocrates diagnosed hypertrophic osteoarthropathy. Finger clubbing was later termed as Hippocratic fingers. Secondary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (SHOA) appears with some other disease (pulmonary, cardiac, hepatic, gastrointestinal etc). The understanding of the aspects of the disease has been increasing slowly and gradually and it has almost reached the desirable level. This is based on the fact that the disease has not yet been related to any profession, specialty or field, and individual experts and scientists have been analyzing the segments of the disease, which is insufficient. The interest of the experts is expected to significantly increase in the near future, contributing thus to the progress in the understanding of this syndrome, as it was defined in 1992. The first description of the disease in Croatia was published in 1970.
