Sažetak
Dance costume in this presentation is primarily examined as a symbol of political and social change in the 19th century Zagreb, Croatia. In the 19th century some parts of Austro-Hungarian Monarchy were marked with national revival. National revival was manifested trough awaking of national conscience, nurturing national identity and its autohtonous art style.Zagreb, the present capital of Croatia, in the 19th century was a part of Austro-Hungarian Monarchy whose capital was Wienna. In Croatia that period was marked with frequent political changes, significant skirmishes, Germanization and Hungarization both in politics and in the culture. This presentation focuses on a research that has been conducted in various archives, libraries and museums in Zagreb. The results are based on analysis and comparison of the 19th century newspapers, fashion illustrations, photographs, etchings, paintings and preserved dance costumes.
