Sažetak
Groundwater is the main source of drinking water in the eastern Croatia region and it contains elevated concentrations of natural organic matter, ammonia, arsenic, manganese and iron due to geological composition of soil. Natural raw waters often contain negative hydrophobic colloids and their stability depends on zeta (ξ) potential. Zeta potential is a function of surface coverage by charged species at a given pH and it is theoretically determined by the ctivity of the species in solution. Zeta potential is known to be key factor for understanding and controlling the efficiency of coagulation and flocculation since neutralization of zeta potential causes the colloidal precipitation Determination and measurement of zeta potential represents a convenient way to optimize coagulant (alum and ferric salts) and/or cationic polymer dosages in drinking water treatment. This study investigated the zeta potential of groundwater from twenty five water-wells in the area of eastern Croatia and the results shows the zeta potential of sampled groundwater ranging from -6.3 to -14.9 mV. The value of physical/chemical parameters (pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, hardness, alkalinity and iron, manganese and arsenic concentration) and values zeta potential of groundwater from Osijek area were correlated. The strongest correlation coefficient was observed between the zeta potential and alkalinity while weakest correlation was between zeta potential and pH value.
