Sažetak
Clothing is one of the oldest human-usable articles that have always had a protective function against climate (especially from cold, snow, ice, moisture, wind, heat, rain, UV radiation from the sun), and also from the environment (dust, mud, vegetation, inhospitable terrain). It later assumed mechanical protective function, protecting craftsmen, farmers and warriors from mechanical injuries and blows. Afterwards, it took on additional functions of class background of its wearer or his rank in the hierarchy within the organizational groups (military, clergy, rulers). It was only later when clothing assumed attributes of embellishment (adornment, self-assertion and seduction). One of the functions of clothing, developed during the twentieth century, was the expression and function of attitudes (commercial, moral, sociological or religious) which was called the language of clothes. Near the end of the 20th century and during transition into the third millennium the functions of protective clothing signifi cantly improved and developed in the developed countries, and intelligent clothing was talked about because it should far surpass conventional clothing thanks to its features. This should be accomplished by installing tiny electronic components, particularly small nanotechnology sensors and actuators, communication elements and electronic computers directly into textile materials or clothes. In this way the intelligent article of clothing could constantly monitor the environment status and state of its user in order to be optimally adapted to the needs of the wearer in accordance with the observed changes in the environment. It would measure and analyze the parameters of the environment, evaluate them using the built-in electronic computer, and then make independent decisions, including decisions about the necessary thermal insulation, which would accommodate the garment to environmental conditions. In this way, advanced intelligent clothes would assume an active character with elements of artifi cial intelligence in contrast to conventional clothes, whose character is primarily passive. All forms of outerwear (casual and professional work clothing) have a particularly high degree of thermal protective function that can be achieved in several ways: by means of construction tools and procedures, passive and active heating and cooling from external energy sources or application of intelligent clothing with high thermal protection attributes which will be described in more details in this chapter.
