Sažetak
This chapter examines the problem of design and placement of recycling and waste management signs printed on packaging and its relationship to the consumer’s interpretation during the process of sorting waste. Product packaging contains, identifies and protects the product, while also communicating its environmental claims to the consumer. To achieve maximum readability and visual impact, the signs must be surrounded by an appropriate amount of blank space, or control area. Similar signs could be grouped together to make them easier to find and understand. Those hypotheses are confirmed by this study with a group of Croatian consumers, through data received by eye-tracking and by the survey of waste management and recycling signs recognition. Given the globalization of the markets, the described issues should be solved internationally, with an agreed-upon organization of signs and an effort on their design’s universal recognition. The design, visual reproduction of signs and their placement on the packaging needs to be more firmly regulated, so that various modifications in print cannot affect their recognizability.
