Satellite navigation in the function of managing traffic flows in the future
Sažetak
Modern civilization is characterised by post- industrial society. Sensors, telecommunication and computer technology (devices and programs) have refined the industrial civilization to such an extent that they have also modified it substantially over the last thirty years. Thus, the modern world is increasingly becoming not a global village as some like to call it, but rather a global virtual reality. The transport system has also significantly contributed and is contributing to the world globalization. The transportation system is at the same time one of the most significant initiators, and thus also consumers of the advanced technologies. The transport system at the global level is one of the biggest consumers of the more and more expensive and less and less available energy. Therefore, its rational and sustainable development represents one of the bases of the sustainable development of the World in the future. Although satellite navigation still has an inevitable role in the control of movement in space, and partly also in the control of traffic flows i.e. individual vehicles, its role will be even more significant, especially in controlling the traffic flows in the cities and in charging for traffic infrastructure utilization in all traffic modes, especially in road traffic and particularly in the cities. Global positioning by means of satellites and inertial sensors and computer technology will enable recording and memorizing of trajectories and times of vehicle movements both over- and underground. Apart from managing traffic flows and charging the use of infrastructure, with managing tariff policy related to the time and space, this will lead to the development of new research methods with the aim of significantly increasing the throughput capacity of road networks and intersections in the cities. Some research carried out at the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences and the Institute of Transportation and Communications in Zagreb indicate the possibility of increasing the throughput capacity of the road network in downtown Zagreb by more than 30%, just by redirecting the network. Recording of the trajectories of all vehicles in time and space will allow studying of traffic flows to undreamed- of dimensions and a detailed study of unfavourable relations of single vehicle trajectories in relation to any other trajectory, i.e. transportation system.
