Sažetak
Cadmium is a non-essential heavy metal toxic to plants, animals and humans. In plants, it affects root and shoot growth, nutrient uptake and homeostasis. Since plants have the capacity to accumulate cadmium in their tissues due to soil pollution, increasing levels of cadmium in the food chain is possible. Six maize genotypes (B73, Mo17, B84, OS6-2, OS552, OS602) were grown in pots with increasing cadmium concentrations (control, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 5 mg, and ~10 mg Cd/kg of soil). Chlorophyll fluorescence was measured on the ear- leaves and photosynthetic performance index (PIABS) was calculated from the measurements, as an indicator of cadmium stress. PIABS values showed significant variation between genotypes in different treatments with better performance of maize lines than hybrids. In general, highest PIABS values were in B73 line and the lowest in OS602 maize hybrid. PIABS proved to be suitable for measurement of cadmium stress with a great benefit of being noninvasive and nondestructive.
