Sažetak
In this paper I take on a cognitive approach to translation studies ; I study how contemporary English, Croatian and Portuguese conceptualize the domain of RELATIONSHIPS. This is done with several aims in mind. One of the aims of the paper is to show how translation studies can benefit from Conceptual Metaphor Theory and its intercultural studies. By collecting metaphorical expressions pertaining to the domain of RELATIONSHIPS from a carefully chosen corpus, I aim to show CMT’s influence through finding similarities and differences in the conceptualizations of relationships and providing a comprehensive list of metaphors which can be used as a reference point in further activities in the realm of translation. This brings us to my second aim: showing how differences in conceptual systems influence translation. These differences are reflected in metaphors, which means the selected languages may conceptualize the same aspect of a relationship with different metaphors. For example, even though English uses the RELATIONSHIPS ARE JOURNEYS metaphor to portray the progress of a relationship, Croatian or Portuguese do not necessarily do the same. Finally, I study how the scenario of RELATIONSHIPS is formed in the English language, through conceptual metaphors and non-metaphorical expressions, and how the differences in the scenario structure in Croatian and Portuguese influence the translation process and translators’ choices in creating the target texts. For instance, the structures of the scenarios may differ in the number of steps that need to be taken before a relationship can ensue, or the number of steps taken before the relationship is allowed to go to a higher level, etc. If one of the languages lacks a step the other two include, this will inevitably call for some creativity in the translation process.
