Sažetak
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between bruxism and sociodemographic parameters, symptoms of TMD, personality and war experience among Croatian navy employees. The sample included 1092 subjects aged 20 to 60 years (mean age 37.06±7.85), 985 men and 107 women. An individual’s bruxism status was based on clinical oral examination and the participants' report of bruxism. Subjects with bruxism index values ≥90th percentile were included in severe bruxism group (n=111), while those with scores below 90th percentile were labeled as negligible bruxism group (n=981). No differences were found in gender distribution between the two studied groups. Regarding age distribution, the proportion of subjects presenting bruxism was lowest in 20-30 y group. The proportion of military personnel presenting with bruxism is a double of the proportion of civilian employees with bruxism (p<0.05). A total of 23.34% subjects in negligible bruxism group and 48.65% in severe bruxism group participated in the war (p<0.001). Higher prevalence of neuroticism (20.72%), extraversion (40.5%) and psychoticism (13.5%) was found in severe bruxism group. According to logistic regression, the probability of severe bruxism was significantly associated with marital status (OR 7.46, 95% CI 4.10-13.59 p<0.001), educational level >15y (OR 0.230, 95% CI 0.063-0.838 p=0.026), neuroticism (OR 2.302, 95% CI 1.116-4.749 p=0.024), psychoticism (OR 2.477, 95% CI 1.108-5.537 p=0.027), military duty (OR 1.954, 95% CI 1.047-3.646 p=0.035) and masticatory muscles tenderness (OR 10.417, 95% CI 5.274-20.575 p<0.001). Smokers also 1.6-3.8 times more likely belonged to severe bruxism group than nonsmokers. Subjects who spent more than 2 years in war were over- represented in severe bruxism group (OR 2, 717, 95% CI 0.923- 8.00 p=0.070). No association was found in the logistic model between high bruxism and age, gender, the range of mouth opening, TMJ sounds.
