Sažetak
The thesis consists of the analysis of all three Godfather films directed by Francis Ford Coppola, an established American film director, producer and screenwriter. His The Godfather films raised public opinion about crime, violence and society. These three thematic components are of particular interest in the analysis. The success of The Godfather films changed the concept of gangster where he became a cultural hero instead of a hardened criminal. The gangster as a film figure had evolved in the 1920s ; however, the success of the genre lasted only until the 1950s. The arrival of The Godfather revived the gangster film genre and offered a completely different perspective on the world of crime and violence. The aims of this research will offer the basic idea of a concept of gangster film before the release of Coppola’s The Godfather, and later. Moreover, the focus is on the impact of The Godfather films upon the audience, and symbolic correlations between gangsters and the overall situation in American society and politics at the time.
