Sažetak
The topic of the thesis is the James Bond phenomenon, its corresponding screen installments and more specifically the villains as a cultural, social and political mirror. The general hypothesis is one of bitter rivalry between the Bond character and his juxtaposed counterparts in the form of villains which are rooted deeply in the Western viewpoint and tradition exhibited as such in the novels and subsequent films. An elaboration on the genesis of the James Bond character and his emergence in the particular time of social and political turmoil is provided. The analysis is conducted of the basis of temporal change in the common features of notable villains. Each decade of the last fifty years of the Bond films has its very own notion of what features villains must encompass. Moreover, the previously mentioned is not strictly divided by decades but by the tension in the relations of the Western world towards the other. The last part descends upon reflecting the influence of the James Bond films on popular culture and the immanent and latent impact that they have made on the formation and preservation of the Western cultural backbone. The principal aims of this thesis are to provide an overview of the villains and their surroundings, to indicate factors that generated their development and evolution associated with the Western apprehension and to make some recommendations on how to approach the given subject considering the realm of international political affairs and social relations.
