Sažetak
The paper focuses on the narrative in horror cinema. Certain similarities, patterns and differences in horror plots, as well as the narrative techniques and elements that horror movies consist of, will be displayed and analyzed. The different narrative techniques used in horror films will be explained and corroborated with examples. The main thesis of the paper is based on Carroll’s theory that the narrative and the plotting of every movie genre are repetitive. Bordwell and Thompson also agree that every film, viewed as an overall form, has its blueprint. Carroll states that the repetitive plots in horror can be divided into four elements: onset, discovery, confirmation and confrontation. Every horror film follows that scheme. In the last part, the paper offers analyses of three horror films ; Robert Wiene’s The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919), Christian Nyby’s and (or) Howard Hawks’s The Thing from Another World (1951), and Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975).
