Sažetak
The thesis offers a comparative look at film and literature, by analyzing the novel The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton and the film directed by Martin Scorsese. The novel is about the conflict between rigid social conventions and imagined but seldom realized escapes from such restrictions. The thesis helps to see how Wharton embraces fixed notions of culture in her fiction and life. The analysis of the adaptation includes Scorsese’s observations and thoughts and the techniques in the film. Although these two works of art, novel and film, must be seen as separate entities, The Age of Innocence is a great example how the film can be accurate to the effect of the novel or theme and message of the novel. It is evident how Scorsese introduces changes where necessary to fit the demands of time and to maximize faithfulness.
