Sažetak
A 23 m thick succession of Quaternary deposits has been described and investigated at Šarengrad, a town situated on the right bank of the Danube River in Eastern Croatia. A geochronological study was performed on loess samples using the luminescence dating method. The post-IR infrared stimulated luminescence (post-IR IRSL) dating protocol was applied and its properties were tested. This protocol was proven to be suitable for the samples under study. The post-IR IRSL based chronology indicates ages much older than the Last Glacial- Last Interglacial cycle as presumed previously, suggesting that a Middle Pleistocene loess-palaeosol sequence is exposed at Šarengrad II. Based on this study, the lowermost loess is correlated to the oxygen isotope stage (OIS) 9-10 and the double palaeosol at the top of the section very likely correlates to OIS7. The Last Glacial record is exposed at the nearby Šarengrad I section where its geochronological framework was established by GALOVIĆ et al (2009). This is the first attempt of dating of older (Antepenultimate Glacial) loess in Croatia.
