Sažetak
When deciding on whether an adaptation has been in anyway successful, it is far from useful to use fidelity as a guide. "Because fiction and film are two fundamentally different artistic media, literal fidelity to a literary source is rarely if ever possible when a fictional work is adapted to the screen ; and it can hardly be the criterion by which a film adaptation is judged" (Phillips, 1997, 151). Film theorist Maurice Yacowar has said that faithful adaptation "is not one that makes no changes, but one in which the changes serve the intention and thrust of the original" (Yacowar, 1977, 7). In this paper I will trace a number of possible thrusts resulting from Francis Ford Coppola's adaptation of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness into Apocalypse Now, thrusts that will point us to a discussion of fidelity in language and speech and its connection to filmic adaptation.
