Sažetak
This study explores the effects of different predictors on individuals’ levels of fear of crime among European countries’ citizens. Previous research emphasized the relationship between macro level/structural, community and individual variables in explaining the levels of fear of crime but also showed that it represents very subjective perception not strongly related to the objective indicators of criminal activity. Thus, as the framework to explore fear of crime this study focuses at the role human values play in explaining the fear of crime after controlling the influence of it’s more evident and direct precedents (e.g. crime indexes, demographics, previous victimization, crime related attitudes). Since human values are individuals’ guiding principles also strongly shaped by the culture it seems interesting to explore in what degree they contribute to the explanation of fear of crime and is there a difference in their contribution among different European countries. Data from the ESS Round 4 – 2008 were analyzed. Analyses were performed using ten primary types of values, as well as four higher-order types of values revealing significant effect of the importance of Openness to change vs. Conservation value dimension to the explanation of fear of crime after controlling the effect of other included variables. Individual, community, and structural correlates of fear of crime were compared among clusters of European countries, and particular attention is given to the obtained similarities and differences across Europe.
