Sažetak
This paper discusses the possibility of the impact of music on the development of nonmusical cognitive abilities. Analyzing the results of the researches it was observed that one line of research is focused to so-called Mozart effect, while the second is based on the idea that music education has a positive influence on the development of nonmusical cognitive abilities. Results of existing researches are classified into three groups. The first one explores the connection between musical and nonmusical cognitive abilities. Another research group is focused on the impact of formal music education on the development of nonmusical cognitive abilities. In the third group of research are neurological researches that explore the impact of music on the neurological development of the individual. The article points out that the observed improvements of cognitive abilities during music education results from the transfer of specific combinations of factors specific to music education, and points to the need of further musical, psychological and neurological researches to prove or disprove this thesis.
