Sažetak
The mobility is an essential element of modern society. At the same time mobility carries one of the highest risks of accidents of any everyday activity. Most traffic accidents (two thirds) occur in urban areas. Road accidents have several kinds of adverse effects. The most important of these are human death and injury, but accidents also cause damage to property and disruption to other road users, and they incur medical, ambulance, police and insurance administration costs. In Croatia a new national road safety program for the period of 2011 - 2020 was adopted that is well designed, but its operationalization has not been lowered to the level of local community (counties and cities/municipalities). Data on traffic accidents are essential for analyzing the causes and consequences of road accidents and calculation of the costs. In Croatia data on traffic accidents are collected only at the Ministry of the Interior, and are not harmonized with data from healthcare institutions. The values applied to the different types of accidents in the national frameworks vary considerably across countries, and official values for Croatia do not exist. The aim of this paper is to define the corresponding monetary amount for different types of accidents and to calculate the cost of road accidents in the local community on the case of Zagreb.
