Sažetak
The existence of double sapwood is manifested in the cross section of the trunk in the form of two rings lighter in colour than the darker core of the trees with coloured heartwood. The outer and larger ring is located peripherally whereas the double sapwood of lesser diameter is located in the heartwood itself. The practical implications of double sapwood are characteristics which are equally bad as in sapwood. The fault is especially significant due to its occurrence in oak trees since this significantly reduces its value, in the first place aesthetically but it also has important negative consequences in exploitation of the most valuable assortment whose quality is significantly reduced during processing. In order to identify the influence of double sapwood, i.e. the changes in the timber characteristics in these zones test material was taken from samples off 10 Slavonian Oak trees where the occurrence of double sapwood was noticed immediately after the trees were cut down, and 2 control samples where occurrence of double sapwood was not noticed. The examination of certain physical and mechanical properties of Slavonian Oak timber in a transversal direction gives results which enable the determination of the influence of double sapwood on the quality and use value of the timber.
