Sažetak
Antibiotics are used extensively in veterinary medicine for therapeutic purposes and as a growth promoter. Enrofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone group antibiotic, which is widely used in poultry production in order to treat respiratory and enteric bacterial infections. Nowadays, the presence of antibiotic active compounds as pollutants in the aquatic environment is considered a relevant and very important topic because their presence in natural waters contributes to the spread of antibiotic resistance in microorganisms. Some members of eminent prescription-drug groups, especially antibiotics, are ubiquitous in natural aquatic systems, since they are polar molecules and hence soluble in water. Therefore, their detection, the investigation of their effects and discovery of versatile possibilities to remove them from the environment impose challenges for researchers. [1, 2] Zeolites are environmentally compatible crystalline aluminosilicates, which have well defined micropore dimensions and composition in a rigid crystal lattice. Because of their unique adsorption and ion-exchange properties natural zeolites, especially clinoptilolite, have a wide variety of applications. [3] In this work natural zeolite from Donje Jesenje, Croatia was used in order to investigate its ability in removal of enrofloxacin from aqueous solutions has been examined in a batch adsorption process at 25 °C. Batch studies have been performed to describe the impact of enrofloxacin concentration and contact time on the removal of the enrofloxacin. The experimental data were analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The sorption parameters and the fitting of the models are determined by nonlinear regression. The kinetics of the adsorption followed pseudo second-order model. The obtained results show that Croatian natural zeolite can be considered as a potential, effective, low-cost and alternative adsorbent for the removal of enrofloxacin from aqueous solutions.
