Sažetak
Isolation of yeasts of Candida genus in urine is rare in healthy population. Unlike that, it is a rather common finding in hospitalised patients and is associated with many controversies in interpretation and treatment. Our goal was to determine frequency of candiduria in ICU, to assess its clinical importance, antifungal therapy if prescribed and its outcome. We have conducted a prospective study including 788 patients from 1994 to March 2000. Yaests of Candida genus were isolated in 17.2% primary isolates of hospital infections pathogens in urine. Except for one, in all cases C. albicans was isolated. In 45.3% cases it was considered as an urinary tract infection, and in 54.7% as an asimptomatic candiduria (colonisation). Antifungal therapy was prescribed to 34.3% patients (fluconazol to 31.2% and ketoconazol to 3.1%), and 59.4% received no treatment, while for 7.8% patients data on treatment were unknown. Patients discharged from ICU 23.4% had sterile urine, in 15.6% Candida persisted, 31.2% had bacteriuria and 28.1% data are missing. Among patients with sterile urine 53.0% received antifungal therapy and 47.0% did not. None of the patients with persisting Candida received antifungal therapy.
