Sažetak
The aim of this paper is to determine dependency of import and export on oil and oil derivatives in the European Union. The global economic crisis has caused a production drop in all industries as well as in the oil and petroleum sector. Up to the year 1995, the oil supply has dominated over oil demand, while in the period after the trend has changed, and the dependency on oil imports in the EU has grown substantially. Despite the growing share of natural gas in the structure of primary energy consumption, high dependency of Member States for mostly imported oil and its derivatives is still visible. This especially applies to the countries of the Mediterranean (Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, less to France) and Ireland. Therefore, the EU will need all its diplomatic and economic skills to fight for additional supply from countries such as Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Angola. One of the main tasks of the EU energy policy is to achieve the best possible balance of supply matrix to specific geographic areas, as well as achieving and maintaining a relationship with the factors of power in these areas which are important for the present and future energy of the EU. The Union has a small part of the world's oil reserves, but on the other hand it is the fifth largest oil refiner. If it would continue at this rate, Europe's oil reserves could be used up quickly. Growing dependency on imports and routes of energy imports, volatile oil and gas prices, climate changes, growing demand, and the competitive market barriers threaten to jeopardize the economic, social and environmental objectives set by the European Union. Due to the growing demand, and their own total energy production drop, the EU's dependency on energy imports increased rapidly.
