Sažetak
During the last two decades competitive dynamics is becoming more evident in many industries, even in industries that were recently considered relatively stable. This change from static to dynamic competition, a trend ignored by most strategy models, is called the hypercompetitive shift. The shift is visible through the sudden increase in competitive activity, greater variability in the profitability of the industry, and the significant changes in firms' market share. Sustainability of the competitive advantage depends primarily on the industrial context in which the company operates and on the nature and possible sources of advantage. The competitive advantage is not sustainable, but more temporary and the duration of firms' advantage is contracted as a result of dynamic interactions with competitors. The environment where the advantages are fast creating but also eroding is called hypercompetition (D'Aveni, 1994). It is characterized by intensive and fast moves of competitors where firms have to be rapid in developing and eroding their own advantages, in other words constantly endanger advantages of competitors. The fundamental consequence of hypercompetition is the temporary nature of competitive advantage. There is no evidence, however, about the real drivers of temporary competitive advantage and the increased volatility of the returns. This paper will illustrate the new conditions that appear with hypercompetition and a theoretical overview of prior research regarding this field will be given.
