Sažetak
There are numerous challenges to ensuring energy for sustainable development. Improving living conditions for current and future generations requires significantly higher levels of energy services. Moreover, these services must be universally accessible, reliable, safe and environmentally friendly, which is why fundamental changes are necessary in the areas of technology, methods, infrastructure and human behaviour. Current demographic, economic, social and technological trends, if not guided by powerful new governmental policies, may induce many challenges to long-term global energy system sustainability. Having in mind energy security and sustainable development, the imperative for each nation is the development of renewable energy resources. In this paper the role of energy sector and efficient energy policies are analyzed. The paper also deals with economic aspects and potentials of renewable energy resources in the Republic of Croatia, with emphasis on the obstacles of development and necessary preconditions for successful development.
