Sažetak
This research provides an overview of current project management practices in Croatia as well as an overview of the usage of project management methodologies. The objectives of this research were to provide a general idea of the current project management practices in Croatia, as well as to provide an overview of the factors that are influencing its development. Furthermore, this research aims to provide insight about the application and characteristics of the project management methodologies used in Croatian companies. The research was based on a questionnaire designed for this purpose and the survey was conducted among the population of project managers in Croatia—130 project managers participated in the survey. Survey data was analyzed in order to find connections and draw conclusions regarding factors that influenced current project management practices. The overview of project management practices is mainly provided by using descriptive statistics, and a further analysis of correlations is shown by using non-parametric statistical tests like the Kruskal-Wallis test or the Mann-Witney test. The analysis shows that project management is generally used among Croatian companies, and also that the usage varies from the very basic application to the very advanced. The differences in project management applications and types of projects typically done in the companies have been found in different industries. Also, one of the factors that impacts project management practices in companies is standards, especially IPMA and PMI bodies of knowledge. It is interesting to note that even though the IPMA branch in Croatia was founded in 1999 and the PMI Croatian Chapter in 2004, PMI has had a significantly higher impact on project management practices. Nevertheless, the majority of project management methodologies used in Croatian companies are custom-based. As most of the companies that participated in the research are information and communication technology (ICT) companies, further analysis for the ICT industry has been conducted as a special area of interest and similar results for the entire population have been found. Regarding project management methodology implementation, areas that are significantly underdeveloped compared to other areas are knowledge management and management of best practices. This research provides a first-of-its-kind assessment of project management practices in this geographical area, and, in addition, it assesses key characteristics of project management methodology and provides insight into the factors that influence its formation. It also provides a significant starting point for further research in any area of the project management practices in Croatia. But, in the area of project management methodologies, further research could include a more detailed assessment of project management methods and techniques applied to different projects and detailed analysis of project attributes, especially in the ICT industry, as this industry is the main development driver of project management in Croatia.
