Sažetak
Subclinical mastitis in the most common disease on the modern farms.Due to subclinical mastitis there are many economical losses on the farms and dairy plants, as well. Economical losses due to mastitis reduced milk production per cow, treatment and culling of cows. Changes in the chemical composition of milk impair processing properties of milk. Somatic cell count (SCC) is an important indicator of herd management, and allows monitoring of both udder health and subclinical mastitis, and elimination of chronic mastitis. Therefore many European countries introduce s SCC, as indicator of subclinical mastitis, in the payment of raw milk. Milk with more than 400 000 cells/ml is hygienically unsatisfactory and plants do not use this milk in processing. Our preliminary investigation showed that SCC in the milk from individual farmers in Croatia is on a very high level. At least one third farmers give milk to the plant with more then 400 000 cells/ml. The aim of this report has been the investigation of incidence of subclinical mastitis in the farms with various numbers of cows, and if the increasing the herd size has influenced on incidence of subclinical mastitis in the farm.
