Sažetak
The 2nd International Workshop on Springing and Whipping of Ships follows the successful 1st Workshop which was organized in 2010. The 1st Workshop (Proceedings available at www.fsb.hr/tulcs/) was extremely well attended by the recognized scientists and engineers from all over the world, and led to very constructive discussions on the hydroelastic issues in the ship design. The second Workshop achieved the same success. All actors which are involved in the ship business (Classifi cation Societies, Universities, Shipyards, Research Institutes, Ship owners, Ship crew…) were represented and it was concluded, once again, that the hydroelastic ship response is an important part of the overall ship structural response. Indeed, model tests, full scale measurements and numerical simulations clearly show the signifi cant high frequency contribution to the total loading and stresses. In the context of the global ship hydroelastic response we distinguish two phenomena: namely springing and whipping, even if sometimes it is not trivial to distinguish in between two of them. Springing is defi ned as a continuous resonant wave induced hydroelastic ship response while the whipping is defi ned as the transient hydroelastic response due to impulsive loading (slamming, green-water, underwater explosion…). The diffi culties related to the correct modelling of this type of structural response either numerically or experimentally are huge and it is fair to say that the problem is still not fully mastered today. There are several research projects worldwide aiming at solving this problem, most of them combining the numerics, small scale model tests and full scale measurements. One of those projects is the EU project TULCS (Tools for Ultra Large Container Ships) on behalf of which the present Workshop is organized. The purpose of the Workshop is to exchange the ideas and experience related to these issues within the informal discussions. The present Workshop was organized jointly by University of Zagreb and Bureau Veritas on behalf of the TULCS project. Since the Workshop is quite informal, there are no classical papers but the presentations only. The present Proceedings include a short abstract of each presentation and the presentation.
