Sažetak
The objective of this study is examining the relationship between meteorological factors and mosquito bites at one location in Osijek during the season 2010. Defining the tolerance or threshold levels of mosquito’s bites is a central part of the planning of mosquito control programme in Osijek. In order to identify the threshold level, sampling of adult mosquitoes was performed by human landing collection at three sampling stations located near the Drava River in the city of Osijek. For the purpose of this paper we have chosen only one sampling location. The sampling was performed every other day during the 15 minutes during the peak of mosquito activity - dusk, from May to September of the season 2010. Principal component analysis (PCA) method was used to evaluate the relationship between number of mosquitoes and measured meteorological variables: temperature, air pressure, relative humidity, wind speeds (both in ms-1 and Boufort scale), mean daily cloudiness, daily insolation, rainfall, and water levels of Drava and Danube Rivers. Interpretation of the results of PCA method is carried out by visualization of the component scores and loadings. The first factor accounted for 32% of the total variation in the data, and it describes a strong positive influence of temperature and daily insolation and negative influence of relative humidity and cloudiness on umber of mosquitoes. The second factor which accounted for 20% of the total variation in the data eparates water levels of Drava and Danube Rivers. The third factor loaded heavily on wind speeds (both in ms-1 and Boufort scale) and accounted for 19% of the total variation. The remaining variables such as pressure and rainfall had no great effects on number of mosquitoes. Weather variables might be treated as possible predictors of mosquito nuisance for Osijek area.
