Sažetak
The aim of this research was to apply the MIPVU procedure on specialized texts on cycling in order to investigate which type of metaphors are used in these texts. Instances of metaphor clusters and deliberate metaphor use are also addressed. Given that the texts come from a specific field of online news reporting, we expect to get different results from those of Steen and his colleagues. The overall number of metaphors in the texts was similar to the number Steen et al. obtained from their investigation of news corpus. In this respect, we might say news reports on cycling exhibit similar number of overall metaphors compared to the number of metaphors Steen et al. (2010) got from the news register investigation. Generally speaking, we might say sport reports do not diverge much from the overall news register in terms of percentage of metaphors, and the differences found refer mostly to the number of prepositions, which was greater than in Steen et al corpus. Qualitatively, the ubiquitous conceptual metaphor SPORTS IS WAR narrowed down to CYCLING IS WAR (as part of a sports cultural model) accounts for most examples in the corpus. There are a number of metaphor clusters and deliberate metaphors. All of the results point to the fact that news reports on cycling are pretty conventionalized compared to other sports reports.
