Sažetak
The possibility of establishing a small business with relative ease in privatization, due to the low sum of starting capital required, resulted in the dynamic growth of private small firms in transition economies. The absence of an enterpreneurship tradition and enterpreneurial experience, as well as inadequate government support had as a consequence a great number of small firms which remained inactive or did not survive, in other words, small firms are not achieving the results which they could achieve, and in that sense they do not effectuate the role which they must have in transition economies. There are numerous directions of action to solving these problems of which we note the following. The role of government is of special significance in relation to creating the best environment possible for the encouragement of an enterpreneurial spirit and the stimulation of enterpreneurship. One direction of action can be in the establishment of various types of organizations which can help enterpreneurs who seek outside management assistance, such as the Small Business Institutes, Small Business Development Centers and business incubators in developed countries, particularly in the United States. An analysis of the present situation and possible solutions for these problems are given using the example of the Croatian economy.
