Sažetak
Hawthorne's "Scarlet Letter" responds to hypothetical questions raised by the Puritan Community of the 17th-century New England. Hawthorne intently thinks about a sober reality of the Puritan life and a fervent wish to escape to irreality, which that drab existence inevitably makes. The author is afraid of civilian authorities that can so easily draw boundaries between the socially acceptable and socially unacceptable.
