Sažetak
The paper deals with a family communication and singles out the protective and risk factors in the development of behavior disorders, which are the results of the way in which parents communicate with their children. The results that are shown in this paper are the part of the scientific project "Models of intervention with the purpose of prevention of the behavior disorders in children and the youth" that is led on the Faculty of Special Education and Rehabilitation, University of Zagreb.420 children and the youth, from the eight secondary schools in the Republic of Croatia participated in the research. Questionnaire that was used is called "Communication in family" (Bašić J., Brajša P., Mejovšek M., Žižak A.).
The paper describes family environment, and points out the importance which the pure communication has in making a family a safe and positive place in which child will feel safe and loved, and where it will have a chance to develop into a responsible and successful individual. The paper shows the most common risk factors in communication (shallow communication, sending of the confusing messages or messages not addressed to the actual recipient but to the third person, "you" messages, mutual blaming or accusations, lack of listening). The results of the research show the range of these risk factors in the sample. The paper also describes statistically significant differences considering the place of living - city, county centers, towns, and villages. The results of the research show that there are differences in 22 of 30 variables that were used for the assessment of a family communication.
Communication is a constant process, and communication skills are important to parents and children. Parents need communication skills in order to create a prosperous family while their children and the youth need them in order to make good social relationships with their peers, and to confront all the challenges that are ahead of them. Therefore, it is important to create primary prevention programs for the ordinary youth population in the form of training in communication skills. The population that is already at risk needs targeted programs in the form of a specific training. Parents should also be educated in order to enhance their competence for the role of a parent. The differences of the way of communication depending on the largeness of the town in which the questioned people live suggest the need to spread primary prevention programs to all towns in Croatia and to create specific programs which will cover risk factors that are present in different parts of the country.
