Sažetak
A review of our own experience in the treatment and follow up of 366 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma, including 33 cases with distant metastases (9%), during the past three decades pointed to clinical picture which could be considered representative for the Croatian population. The mean patient age at the time of primary tumor diagnosis, recorded in our population, was 42.2 years, with a male to female ratio 1:3.6. A definite difference in the development of distant metastases and in survival of metastatic patients was observed when the patients were divided into low risk (men aged 40 or younger, and women aged 50 or younger) and high risk (older patients) groups, making evident an adverse effect of increasing age on the prognosis. In older age groups (61+), a significant peak of the development of metastatic carcinoma, reaching an incidence of 15% to 20% was observed.
