Sažetak
The term composite is broadly applied to the material with interfaces. Adhesion between the phases which constitute the composite is always important. Interface engineering of composites means the ways in which interfacial regions can be modified in order to affect significant changes in properties. The examples given in this paper will be directed towards the special effects of filler characteristics on the interface in composites, used as adhesives and coatings: - nanoscale - sizes of (calcium carbonate) (CaCO3 ) filler particles in comparison to the micro- and macro- sized particles in composite with poly(vinyl acetate)(PVAc) matrix ; - surface pre-treatment of CaCO3 with stearic acid and their salts, and proposed structures of the monolayer and/or multilayers ; - special morphology of natural diatom filler in composite with poly(acrylate) (PA) copolymer matrix. The controlled surface engineering of filler, offered the possibility of gradual change of the composite interface. In this way, and in the way of gradual volume filling, the composite properties could be modelled to achieve the optimal adhesion with matrix, when the negative influence of interface can be neglected. Morphology of initial fillers in composite films and identification the loci of failure in composite was made. Quantification of interface strength according models of composite mechanical behaviour was also made. The results illustrate the importance of interface in composite behaviour, and a possibilities of prediction the optimal adhesion between filler and matrix.
