Sažetak
Purpose of the work. The anatomical location and the architecture of the proximal scutum (PS) make injuries of this structure difficult to identify by physical examination, and radiographic findings are only based on visualization of body lesions therefore ultrasonographic examination provides essential information for an accurate diagnosis of PS damage. Diagnosis of injury to the palmar ligament (PL) is based mainly on abnormal imaging features. Ultrasonographic abnormalities include enlargement of the wideness of PL (>6 mm), thickening of the PL and alteration of the echogenicity in case of desmitis.Conclusions. This study showed that the value of wideness of PL is rising with age what might be a sequel of cumulative subclinical ligament degenarations due to high biomechanical stresses during locomotion. Those defects heal by forming collagen tipe III that lack elasticity. Comparing results among breed groups, the narrowest ligamnets were observed on thoroughbred horses what was a consequence of their light constitution, as opposed to draft horses with the widest ligament size. Furthermore, we recorded the influence of usage on the wideness of PL which was due to age difference in sport and pleasure horses and the percentage of thoroughbread influence in breeds used for sport. We conclude that the increased wideness of PL is not always a sign of PS pathology, but it could also be influenced by age, use and breed of horses.
