Sažetak
Writing about new media is no longer new/s. New media studies have been part of media and communication studies since 1990s. Digital age has brought specific challenges in pre-production, production, post-production, distribution and media reception and has raised new issues related to image, narration, sound and other means of expression used in audio-visual media. Combination of methods applied in media studies, cultural studies, film studies, philosophy, sociology, information science, critical discourse analysis etc. gave rise to Internet studies, virtual ethnography, computer games studies, software studies and other smaller areas of study, which were first to explore numerous phenomena that had not been in the focus of interest of humanistic and other sciences. In the first ten years a lot was written about cyber space (William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, Philip Zhain and others), virtual reality (Blascovich i Bailenson, Cline), hyper texts (Ted Nelson, Alexander, Bolter, Hayles, Manovich), internet galaxy (Castells, building on the work of McLuhan), futurist utopias and dystopias. This was followed by studies on digitalization and remediation (Bolter i Grusin), interface space and rhetoric (Manovich), image ontology (Deleuze, Gadamer), semiotics of digital age media (Eco, Hall, Hebidge)… From optimistic utopian discourses on the new media that will democratize the media combining old and new practices with the audience not being a passive consumer, but rather an interactive participant in the production and distribution of media contents, exchanging creative ideas and knowledge in the participatory culture ; to widespread anxiety caused by the millennium virus, increase in violence among young people („digital natives“), a flood of pornographic contents and subliminal messages of the hyperbolic marketing web space. By all means, the (networked) computer has brought us to the point where it has become necessary to reconsider the century long analogue media practices.
