Sažetak
The breast cancer has lately been supplanted as the number one cause of cancer death in females in the western regions. We recognized it as a leading mortality-morbidity issue due to data from the "Sestre milosrdnice" University Hospital registry and National Registry for Cancer. The goal of our study was to compare histological findings and age-dependent characteristics in 578 patients with breast cancer diagnosed at the Ljudevit Jurak Clinical Department of Pathology, Zagreb ; recorded in two period before (1980/81) and after (1997/98) the war aggression on Croatia in 1991. Among those patients there were 575 women and 3 men with female to male ratio (F/M) of 191, 7. Histological type distribution in the 1980 was: invasive intraductal carcinoma found in 153 (98, 7%) patients and invasive lobulare carcinoma in 2 (1, 3%) patients. In the 1981 there were 268 (99, 3%) intraductal carcinoma and 2 (0, 7%) lobulare carcinoma. We found 69 (93, 2%) intraductal carcinoma and 5 (6, 8%) lobulare in the year of 1997 and 61 (92, 4%) intraductal carcinoma and 5 (7, 6%) lobulare carcinoma in the year of 1998 Analysing the numbers related to the early eighties and late nineties there is a statistically significant increase of invasive lobulare carcinoma from 0, 9% to 7, 1%. The average age at the time of diagnosis in 1980 was 52, 9 while in 1981 was 54, 0. In the year of 1997 average age of the patients was 60, 1 and in 1998 was 61, 5 , showing noticeable increase in average age of patients between the compared two- year periods. Conclusions given by studying changes of distribution of carcinoma types and changes of average age could be explained by social difficulties and stress induced by war activities in the region.
