Sažetak
Background: Although the kinking of internal carotid arterie(ICA) has been commonly identified, its clinical relevance is still debated. Aim of this study was to evaluate clinical symptoms in patients who were identified as having the kinking of their ICA by means of colour duplex ultrasound. Methods: We analyzed patients with the kinking of ICA withouta significant pathology of stenosis. Kinking was categorized as mild (more than 60 degrees), moderate(30–60 degrees), or severe (less than 30 degrees). Hemodynamics were analyzed according to the peak systolic velocities.Clinical features were obtained from patients’ medical records. Results: We detected the kinking of ICA in 47 outpatients (16 males and 31 females). 31 of them were older than 60 years. In 8 patients kinking was bilateral. Half of patients were with the severe degree of kinking, followed by 14 with the moderate degree and 9 with the mild one. The leading referral diagnosis by clinicians was vertigo (16/47), followed by completed stroke (10/47), transient ischemic attack (9/47), headache (5/47), syncope (3/47), Parkinson’s disease (3/47) and reversible ischemic neurological deficit (1/47). Among risk factors for atherosclerosis hypertension was present in 32/47 patients, followed by heart diseases (15/47) hyperlipidemia (12/47) and diabetes (9/47). Hypertension was more associated with the severe degree of kinking. Conclusion: In patients who had kinking of ICA clinical presentation of their symptoms was highly suggestive of the cerebrovascular disease. They had a heavy burden of concomitant risk factors, particularly hypertension.
