Sažetak
The context of this research is wheat genetic resistance for stem (caused by P. graminis Pers. F. sp. tritici) and leaf rust (caused by Puccinia triticina formerly Puccinia recondita Roberge ex Desmaz.f.sp. tritici Eriks and Henn.) which are two of the major diseases troubling Croatian wheat growers. Wheat is one of the most important crops grown in Croatia and these diseases are a great threat to its production. The disease caused by Puccinia species has reached epidemic proportions in many parts of the world, and it sometimes causes severe losses by reducing grain yield and quality of wheat and other crops. Stem rust has the potential to cause losses up to 100%, whereas up to 40% losses due to leaf rust have been reported. The best approach to control this disease is to create wheat cultivars that carry effective resistance genes and introduce them into the local bread wheat. It is also an economically effective and environmentally friendly approach. Multipathotype tests apply the principle of the gene-for gene hypothesis to postulate rust resistance genes in host genotypes. We are characterizing the leaf and stem rust reaction of 50 Croatian wheat cultivars and will postulate the presence of known genes based on infection type of well-characterized races of these pathogens.
