Sažetak
Slavonski Brod is situated in east Croatia, on the left bank of the Sava river. The city eith the surrounding area has 114 250 inhabitants. The aim of the study was to assess the distribution and prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the area of Slavonski Brod. During a twenty-year period (1980-2000) we studied medical histories of MS patients, and selected 51 clinically diagnosed, and laboratory and neuroradiologically verified MS cases. On December 31, 2000, prevalence of MS in the city was 44.6/100 000, and mean annual incidence (1980-2000) was 2.22/100 000. There was a female predominance (62, 7%) with a sex index of 1.68 in favor of woman. According to age prevalence, MS was frequent in the 30-40 age group. The clinical form of the disease was remittently progressive in 60.78% of cases. Results of the study indicated Slavonski Brod with the surrounding area to belong to the high-risk zone for MS in Europe, according to the prevalence of MS.
