Sažetak
Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science (Zagreb University) has a long tradition in cultivation of rare, endemic and endangered Croatian plant species, resulting in a very valuable plant collection. Most of those plants are grown in three Rock gardens: the Karstic, the Mediterranean and the sub-Mediterranean. Out of 1061 strictly protected and 572 protected wild plant taxa of Croatian flora, 132 strictly protected and 184 protected plant species are cultivated in the Botanical Garden at this moment. Two strictly protected stenoendemic species, Degenia velebitica and Centaurea ragusina are being cultivated from 2008 and 2009, respectively, in accordance to permits issued by the Ministry of Environmental and Nature Protection, with more plants being added to the program by 2015. Several other attractive stenoendemic species (Dianthus velebiticus, Fibigia triquetra, Degenia velebitica, Onosma javorkae and Alyssum montanum ssp. pluscanescens) were successfully propagated in vitro, showing potential for a larger-scale cultivation. In 2001 a cooperation between Botanical Garden, Northern Velebit National Park and Biokovo Nature Park was established, in order to inventarise and restore their two unkept mountain botanical gardens. These projects were successfully carried out by 2009. The future plans include improvement and enrichment of the aforementioned programs, as well as starting the new ones (f.e. establishing a modern Seed bank in order to conserve most valuable plant taxa from the rich Croatian flora).
